Think about how your child will get to and from school.
Your child may get travel help if they go to the nearest suitable school.
If you choose a different school and we agree, you’ll usually need to arrange and pay for travel.
Travel help is not linked to a school’s admission rules.
When travel help starts
Most children get travel help from the term after their fifth birthday.
We may help younger children in rare cases.
Changes at 16
When your child turns 16 or reaches Year 11, travel help may change.
After this, we don’t have to provide free or reduced-cost travel.
We may still offer help in special cases.
Reapplying for travel help
Don’t assume current travel arrangements will continue.
You may need to reapply, even if your child stays at the same school.
Transport notes in EHC plans
Your child’s EHC plan may include a transport note.
This means we’ve named the nearest suitable school.
If you choose a different school, you may need to pay for travel.
Who can get travel help
Not all children with an EHC plan need travel help.
We assess each application and follow national rules to decide who gets help.
