Notice

Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, Section 14(1) & (2)
The ßÙßÇÂþ»
Public Footpath 64 (Elstead)
Temporary Prohibition of Traffic Order 2025

The ßÙßÇÂþ» Public Footpath No. 64 (Elstead) Temporary Prohibition of Traffic Order 2025 was made on the grounds of public safety due to the adjacent riverbank having become undermined and unstable/having collapsed, and a collapsed bridge.

The order, which followed a previous 2014 closure order which was subsequently continued in force 10 times by the Secretary of State for Transport, came into operation on 23 May 2025. It was due to expire on 23 November 2025 but has now been continued in force by the Secretary of State for Transport until 23 November 2026 or until a permanent diversion order has been approved, whichever is the earlier.

The order as continued prohibits all traffic on foot or by any other means from entering or proceeding in that length of Public Footpath 64 (Elstead) which extends for 340 metres from its junction with Public Footpath 65 (Elstead) (Grid ref: 490513 144341) at point A, to its junction with a permissive path at point B (Grid ref: 490585 144017) and which is marked by a solid bold line on plan no. 3/1/8/H21.

The prohibition described above will only be operative while the county council, or an authorised person acting on its behalf, displays signs prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002 (S.I. 2002 No. 3113) prohibiting the said movements. Access to properties will not be affected.

The alternative route is as follows: from the northern end of closure at point A proceed in a generally southerly direction along Public Footpath 65 (Elstead), then in a generally easterly direction along a permissive footpath to point B. Total length of the proposed diversion: 450 metres. This route is the opposite in reverse.
