Tackling potholes across ßÙßÇÂþ»

How we’re working to improve road surfaces

We know how frustrating potholes are, especially at this time of year when freezing temperatures and rain can cause road surfaces to crack, and more potholes to form.

Our how do potholes form video explains more about why this happens across the country.

ßÙßÇÂþ» has some of the busiest roads in the country and this naturally takes its toll, but we’re working incredibly hard to prevent potholes and to repair them quicker. This includes:

  • Investing nearly £300m in repairing and improving ßÙßÇÂþ»’s roads between 2023 and 2028
  • Resurfacing more roads and pavements than ever to prevent potholes forming in the first place. 90 miles of roads and 20 miles of pavements were resurfaced between April and November 2025 alone. During this time, we saw a 40% reduction in the number of potholes reported
  • Fixing potholes in less than 3 days after inspection
  • Carrying out larger-scale repairs where possible, minimising the need to return to a location and easing the impact of our roadworks
  • Using innovative Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology in our Highways Officers vehicles so they can detect defects while they are out and about on ßÙßÇÂþ»’s roads
  • We’ve also made it easier for residents to report potholes and to track their progress too.

How to report potholes

through our Fix My Street page.

As well as reporting issues which need fixing, cleaning or clearing, residents can sign up for local updates and track the progress of repairs.
