Accessible resources for world cancer day 2026

World Cancer Day is on Wednesday 4 February. This aims to bring together individuals, communities and organisations to raise awareness and work towards reducing the impact of cancer.

People with a learning disability face significant challenges with lower screening uptake. We have developed a page on the learning disability and autism hub all about cancer screening to provide information in a more accessible way and help to reduce barriers for people.


Sport in Mind with Autism Friendly ßÙßÇÂþ»­

run a wide range of free adult sessions for people who are experiencing mental health problems. These free sessions are run at local venues such as leisure centres.

Autistic people experiencing mental health problems can . Sport in Mind's definition of mental health problems include 'anxiety' and 'isolated or lonely'.

ßÙßÇÂþ»­ sessions include:

  • yoga
  • bowling
  • badminton
  • table tennis
  • pickleball

Sessions are drop-in, so there is no need to book ahead. All equipment is provided although you can bring your own. Open to all abilities. You can see the latest on their website.


Autism Friendly ßÙßÇÂþ»­ Cinema survey

Autism Friendly ßÙßÇÂþ»­ plans to design a guide for cinemas on how to be more inclusive for autistic and neurodivergent people. They are keen to hear from people about this.

New safeguarding easy read about Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards available

We have developed a new easy read about Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) which is now available on the learning disability and autism hub as well as ßÙßÇÂþ»­ Safeguarding Adults Board website.

It was developed with the expertise of the ßÙßÇÂþ»­ DoLS Team as well as our experts by experience, the Get it Right! team.


Hoarding – online course for ßÙßÇÂþ»­ residents

An online course for ßÙßÇÂþ»­ residents who hoard is now open for registration, run by the . It’s a practical course with set tasks to learn how to manage the condition.

The course will run on the 2 Thursday of every month from March to December 2026. It is on Zoom from 6.30pm to 7.45pm.

ßÙßÇÂþ»­ Adult Learning offers a range of courses for adults living in ßÙßÇÂþ»­ who want to improve their English and are speakers of other languages, helping to:

  • speak to friends and family
  • read English newspapers and magazines
  • practice writing emails, letters, articles, reports

Free to eligible learners who have lived in the UK for 3 years at the start of the course or asylum seekers or refugees.


ßÙßÇÂþ»­ consultation launched on draft short breaks policy for adults

A public consultation is now open on a draft short breaks policy for adults with care and support needs and their families.

Short breaks give people with eligible care needs the chance to enjoy meaningful activities and experiences while their family carers get time to rest and recharge. Short breaks, also known as respite care, can include day, evening or weekend activities provided at home, in residential services or community settings.

The draft policy sets out the county council’s approach to providing short breaks for adults with care needs and their families, in line with its Care Act duties. It is the first time the approach has been set out in a single policy, helping to ensure transparency and consistency.

The draft policy aims to ensure that short breaks are accessible, fair, and meet the needs of individuals and their carers.

Consultation questionnaire

The draft Adults, Wellbeing and Health Partnership (AWHP) policy and a questionnaire for people to share their views can be found on the .

The consultation period will be open for 8 weeks from Monday 12 January 2026 and will close at 23:59 on Sunday 8 March 2026.

Leatherhead carers event

  • Date: Wednesday 4 February 2026
  • Time: 1pm to 3pm
  • Where: Bookham Scouting Centre, Eastwick Park Avenue, Great Bookham, Leatherhead KT23 3NA

There will be a carers drop-in event for patients in the Leatherhead and Bookham area. The event is open to anyone supporting a family member, friend or neighbour who are unable to manage without help.

The event will provide information about the support available to carers in the community including financial support, practical help, wellbeing resources and how to get connected with local services.


Moving and positioning training sessions available

ßÙßÇÂþ»­ Independent Living Charity (SILC) has a limited number of face-to-face moving and positioning training sessions available to book. They are for people with a direct payment or personal health budget to train their Personal Assistants (PAs) and is funded by Skills for Care. Practitioners and social care teams can also make referrals on their clients’ behalf.

The training is an opportunity for people to have a trainer visit their home and train their PAs on the correct procedures for safe moving and positioning, bespoke to the individual, and using the equipment in their home.
