Course intent
Start your Friday morning with an engaging lecture as we delve into Matilda of Boulogne’s impressive fight to support and free her husband, King Stephen during the civil war.
What will I learn?
Join us as we look at the life of Matilda of Boulogne, the wife of King Stephen (1135-1154). A formidable force, she was one of Stephen’s most active and staunch supporters throughout his long struggle with their cousin the Empress Matilda. Queen Matilda played an unusually active role for a woman of the period and when her husband was captured, she proved herself an effective general who managed to force the Empress to release Stephen.
