Course intent
This online course introduces you to the expressive world of oil painting. Learn the fundamental skills and techniques of working with oils, from brushwork and colour mixing to layering and texture.
You will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of subjects and approaches, helping you discover and develop your own personal style.
The course includes one-to-one support, opportunities for group discussion, and a chance to review and evaluate each other’s work in a supportive and creative environment.
What will I learn?
You will learn:
- Design Techniques: Learn colour theory & colour mixing & how to use tone, colour, composition, and perspective to create dynamic focal points in your paintings. Understand how these elements interact to enhance your artwork’s visual impact.
- Material Knowledge: Gain a solid understanding of oil paints, including colour mixing and tonal values. Learn how to choose and use various tools and materials, including brushes, to achieve different textures and effects. Gain insights into building up an oil painting in layers.
- Craftsmanship: Develop your understanding of the tools and brush techniques required, creating effective composition. Discover your personal style and creative voice through a series of guided exercises and experimentation. Explore the work of other artists to inspire and deepen your understanding of artistic practices.
- Production Process: Learn essential oil painting techniques and the importance of drawing within painting. Learn how to sketch outlines and incorporate drawing skills into your painting process for greater accuracy and depth.
- Workshop Practice: Understand the importance of maintaining a clean, organised studio. Learn how to clean up safely and dispose of materials in an environmentally responsible way, ensuring a safe and sustainable workspace.
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
Stage 1 – This stage is for learners who are new to their chosen subject area. With the focus on introducing individuals to basic materials, tools, and techniques, and to inspire confidence in creative expression.
This course will be delivered through live online sessions using Zoom.
To fully participate in this course, you will need:
An email address
A reliable internet connection
A computer/laptop /tablet with a fully updated browser (preferably Google Chrome), microphone and webcam.
Once enrolled on this course you will receive detailed instructions for taking part online.
You will need to complete some course documentation to help assess your progress.
This course will be using ZOOM for Education.
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
You will need:
- A basic set of oil paints
- Oil painting brushes - stiff bristle such as hog bristle. size 6 and 8 ‘round’, or flat/filbert. Softer synthetic brushes used for watercolour are not suitable but soft synthetic brushes for acrylic can be used to blend oil paints
- Palette or a tear off paper palette specifically designed for oil painting
- Oil sketching paper or primed canvases or canvas boards, suggested size A3
- Wear clothes that you would not mind getting paint on, perhaps an apron
- Low odour brush cleaner (Sansodar) • Oil medium (linseed oil or liquin)
- Drawing pencils
- A sketchbook (A4)
- Optional, if available, easel or an oil painting box capable of holding a canvas while you paint
For the Zoom lesson: you will need access to a computer/laptop/tablet with a reliable internet connection, working microphone, and webcam. If you struggle to read printed text on a screen, you may find it beneficial to have access to a printer to make your own hard copies of resources.

What can I do when I finish the course?
In discussion with your tutor, you may like to enrol onto a Stage 2 course or other Arts & Crafts courses at SAL.
