Course intent
On this 5 week course, learn how to draw and then paint in acrylic paint in a more skilled way. Gain confidence whilst exploring a variety of subjects, painting both from life and photographic references. With hands-on tuition and constructive feedback, you will become more confident and find what interests and inspires you.
What will I learn?
Acrylics are known for their vibrant, strong colours and the immediacy they offer, with no long drying times. You will discover how quickly a painting can be built up, making this medium ideal for painters who don’t have the space to store slow-drying oil paintings.
You will learn
- acrylic painting techniques
- drawing techniques
- colour mixing and colour theory - which colours work well together
- how to work from photographs or other 2D images
- composition: how to make your painting more interesting
- Develop personal expression through drawing and acrylic painting
This course will build on past learning, week by week, to develop new skills. Please attend every lesson, where possible, to maximise your progress.
For courses of more than one session, you will find you make the most progress if you attend every taught lesson and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided.
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
For those who have completed a Stage 1 Drawing & Acrylic course, including the Hong Kong Drawing & Acrylic course. Also, if you have completed a Stage 1 drawing course and are looking to boost your skills on this Stage 2 Drawing & Acrylic course.
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
- An apron and suitable clothing for painting spills.
- Notebook or sketchbook and pencil
- A set of acrylic paint to include the colours: Titanium White, Mars Black, Burnt Umber, Ultramarine, Yellow Ochre, Crimson, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow (please avoid traditional cadmium pigments). Daler Rowney System 3 are a good brand.
- A small assortment of flat and round synthetic brushes. Cass Art sell a white synthetic brush set of 5 brushes which is an affordable introductory set with a variety of shapes and sizes
- A palette. This needs to be a flat surface (preferably without dipped sections) that measures around 20 x 30cm minimum. Glass, ceramic, enamelled metal, or plastic palettes can be used. We do not recommend the use of Plexiglass or other types of acrylic sheeting, as acrylic paints and mediums can adhere permanently.
- A palette knife
- A3 pad of acrylic painting paper (250gsm or higher)
- Kitchen roll or old cotton rags to clean your brushes
- A clean, empty, leak-proof glass jar with a lid to store and transport paint water in
- Masking tape
Please wear older type clothing or a protective apron as acrylic paint, if left to dry, is plastic based and waterproof so it does not easily come off clothing.
What can I do when I finish the course?
Continue in the Spring term on this course. You could also progress onto other art & craft classes, including further drawing and painting courses or one-day specific workshops with this tutor.
The Tutor teaches drawing and painting at Guildford centre on a Monday and Friday morning and Farnham centre on a Thursday morning and afternoon.
