Course intent
This course will provide you with the skills, knowledge and competencies to use counselling skills ethically and safely in a range of contexts and roles. The course is taught by expert tutors with practical experience as professional counsellors.
What will I learn?
During the course, you will learn a combination of counselling theory, practical skills and ethical guidelines. Some of the topics covered in the course are:
- Prepare to work within an ethical framework for counselling
- Understanding the counselling relationship
- Understand difference and diversity issues to develop empathic understanding
- Work within a user-centred approach to counselling
- Use counselling theory to develop self-awareness in counselling practice
- Understand theories of counselling and mental health
- Use feedback, reflection and supervision to support counselling studies
You will work towards the CPCAB Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills providing you meet the minimum qualification requirements, including internal and external assessment and moderation.
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
This is a one-year course for adults aged 19 or over. This qualification is intended for candidates who have already acquired a recognised qualification in counselling skills and want to:
- Take the next step in training to become a counsellor.
- Learn more about counselling theory, ethics and mental health.
- Be prepared for work as a professional counsellor in an agency setting.
- Completion of a written and an online initial assessment prior to attending an interview.
In addition to attending your classes, you will need to work independently so we recommend that you further develop your learning skills and understanding outside the classroom through use of the Internet, Moodle and other resources signposted to you by your tutors.
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
You need to bring:
- Pen
- Paper
- A folder for keeping notes
You will also need to have access to a computer or a laptop and a printer.
Depending on your eligibility, there are no tuition, registration, or examination fees to pay for this course if:
- You are UK national and have lived in the UK continuously for three years.
- You are a UK national and have lived in either the EEA only, or EEA and UK only for at least the last three years.
- You are an EEA national with pre-settled or settled status (under the EU settlement scheme) and have lived continuously in the EEA, Gibraltar, or the UK for at least three years.
ï‚§ You are a non-UK national with permission granted by the UK government to live in the UK continuously for at least three years.
What can I do when I finish the course?
Once you have completed the course successfully, you will be awarded a Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills from the CPCAB. You can then move on to complete the Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling Studies, or the Level 4 Diploma in Life Coaching.
This course is an ideal first step to building a new career as a professional Counsellor or Life Coach.
