Course intent

Develop skills and know-how in life drawing and painting. You will discover new techniques and strengthen existing observational drawing skills, working exclusively from the unclothed figure, and using a variety of poses. In this inspiring one- day workshop you can try life drawing for the first time or discover new techniques and strengthen existing observational drawing skills, working exclusively from the unclothed figure.

What will I learn?

The tutor will demonstrate techniques and give group and individual instruction and support.

You will learn:

  • quick drawing techniques to warm up
  • measuring the figure
  • addressing negative spaces
  • composition and mark making through use of extended drawing tools.
  • working on poses which vary in length depending on the theme
  • rhythm and gesture

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is suitable for all abilities. A mixed ability group means you can learn from other people in the class whilst discovering your own style.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You need to bring:

  • A pad of white A1 and/or A2 cartridge paper (120 gsm or more) and
  • some lighter weight cheaper A1/ A2 paper for quick poses
  • a selection of pencils, a range of charcoal (willow),
  • masking tape or bulldog clips for boards and
  • an eraser/putty rubber.
  • Paper or a notebook to record tutor ideas, processes and the feedback from your tutor.

Boards and easels are provided.

What can I do when I finish the course?

Learners can join a longer Life & Portrait class, such as the Wednesday evening class run by tutor Sam Baxter-Kennedy in Woking. Or you can try other Saturday workshops in Woking and Guildford which offer the chance to try tasters and introduction sessions. We offer portrait courses in both Guildford and Woking. There are also Drawing & Illustration courses you might enjoy or Sculpture with a Life Model in Guildford.

When you enrol, please let us know if you would like to discuss your extra support needs with a member of the Supported Learning Team who will then contact you as soon as possible. If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
