Learner Use of AI
Whilst learners may be encouraged to use AI to supplement their learning, they must adhere to strict guidelines which are set out in the JCQ document or where applicable, other awarding body use of AI guidance.
This includes:
- Ensuring all submitted work is their own. Learners who misuse AI in formal assessments submitted to an awarding body will have committed malpractice.
- Detailing any areas where AI has been used to support their work and acknowledging this.
- Retaining a copy of the question and AI generated responses for reference purposes.
- Learners will be requested to acknowledge this alongside declaring own work only is submitted.
Learners using AI should also be aware of:
- AI’s limitations, bias and risk of misinformation.
- the risk to intellectual property rights to the work submitted.
Learners must ensure that AI is used for their own use and is not used to create anything which could be defamatory to another person or SAL.
SAL’s staff must ensure AI is used ethically
This includes but is not limited to:
- Undertaking training where available on the advantages, risks and ethical use of AI
- Where applicable monitoring learner work for possible AI misuse including the use of an approved AI and plagiarism checker tool.
- Integrating AI within the curriculum
- Where applicable ensuring alignment with Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) guidelines and other awarding body requirements on AI in assessments
- Not allowing or causing intellectual property, including learners’ work, to be used to train generative AI models, without appropriate consent or exemption to copyright.
- Ensuring learners are aware of plagiarism and the consequences of malpractice.
- Embedding the risks of AI use in safeguarding and online safety discussions
- Ensuring learners are not accessing or creating harmful or inappropriate content online, including through generative AI in the classroom.
- Ensuring learners are aware of the risks of perpetuating bias, misinformation and discrimination when using AI.
- Drafting and editing documents
- Producing presentations, slides, charts, podcasts or videos
- Generating content for social media posts and website articles
- Brainstorming ideas
