Background
In 2022 ßÙßÇÂþ» shared proposals to improve road safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists and to better utilise green space in Tongham. Since the initial engagement, plans have been developed to deliver the scheme. To see information about the earlier engagement, visit the .
Delivery of the scheme will be carried out in phases.
Phase one: delivering road safety improvements on The Street, Oxenden Road and Poyle Road
In March 2023 we shared plans for the first phase of planned improvement works in Tongham. The plans outlined changes to The Street, including the introduction of a series of raised tables and improvements to the uncontrolled pedestrian crossing point north of the Manor House flats. The plans also outlined improvements to Oxenden Road including a priority giveway and the addition of a speed cushion. Following feedback received in the earlier engagement, the scheme also included a pavement parking ban on The Street to ensure pavements remain clear for pedestrians, making them safer and easier to use.
These changes to calm traffic on The Street and Oxenden Road have now been introduced. The changes are to be monitored for a period of up to six months, and if appropriate, a 20-mph zone will be considered .
The update shared in March also included information on proposed works to reduce vehicle speeds on Poyle Road – due to some changes to the plans for Poyle Roadthese works will be delivered in the next phase of works in Tongham. This second phase of the scheme is being designed in line with feedback received from engagement with residents and the Parish Council and we will share plans at a later stage once they have been developed.
Phase two: changes to The Street junction and creation of a pocket park in Tongham
Proposed improvements:
- Creating an area of green space with seating for public use (pocket park) on the grassed area to the north of the Nisa Local store
- New planting, sustainable drainage systems (rain gardens) with seating and additional cycle stands on The Street
- Introduction of a raised junction between Grange Road, The Street, and Poyle Road with an uncontrolled crossing point.
- A priority give-way system on Poyle Road to highlight to vehicles that they are entering a village environment and encourage slower and safer driving.
This phase of the scheme is being designed in line with feedback received from engagement with residents. We will share plans at a later stage once they have been developed.
