Registering a birth

Congratulations on the birth of your child.

You must book an appointment to register a birth within 42 days of your child being born.

Children born in ßÙßÇÂþ»­ can be registered at a ßÙßÇÂþ»­ Register Office.

Children born in the London Boroughs of Kingston upon Thames, Richmond upon Thames, Croydon and Sutton cannot be registered at a ßÙßÇÂþ»­ Register Office.

Who can register a child's birth?

  • If the parents were married or in a civil partnership when the child was born, either parent can register the birth.
  • If the parents were not married or in a civil partnership, the father or second parent must go to the appointment with the mother if they want their details included. If the mother goes alone, only her details will be recorded.
  • If there are two female parents who were not married or in a civil partnership, both must attend the appointment and meet the legal requirements under the for the second parent’s details to be included. If the mother goes alone, only her details will be recorded.

If your child’s birth occurred outside of ßÙßÇÂþ»­ or are unsure of the county, please search for a register office via:

Exceptions

  • If you live in West Sussex and your child was born at East ßÙßÇÂþ»­ Hospital, you can also register your child at the .
  • If you live in Hampshire and your child was born at Frimley Park Hospital or Royal ßÙßÇÂþ»­ County Hospital, you can also register your child at a in Aldershot, Alton, Basingstoke and Petersfield register offices.
  • If your child needs to be registered with a Statutory declaration or a Parental order, please do not book your appointment online, please contact us and ask for the Nominated officer to book your appointment.

What to bring to your appointment

Please bring your 'Red Book' or any birth paperwork provided by the hospital or midwife.

It would also be useful to bring:

  • Your passport or birth certificate.
  • Proof of your current address.
  • Proof of any former name or names (for example, change of name deed or marriage or civil partnership certificate).
  • Birth certificate of any previous children.
  • Your marriage or civil partnership certificate where applicable.

Please note that you are not legally required to produce these documents, but they can help to ensure your child's birth is correctly registered.

If you do not speak or understand English, please bring someone who can translate for you. Please contact us if you need help.

You are not required to bring your child to the appointment.


What the registrar needs to know

During the appointment, the registrar will ask you to provide the following information:

  • Place and date of the birth.
  • Forenames and surname you have chosen for the child.
  • Sex of the child.
  • Parents' names, surnames and address (including any former names).
  • Places and dates of parents' birth.
  • Date of parents' marriage or civil partnership (if applicable).
  • Parents' occupations.
  • Mother's maiden surname (if applicable).

The registrar will ask you to read and check all the information on the register page before signing. It is essential that all information, names including spelling and dates are correct, as this is a legal document.

If there are any errors in the registration, you will be required to apply for a formal correction of errors, which will incur a charge.


Birth certificates

  • A full birth certificate includes the parents’ details and costs £12.50. You’ll need it for many things during your child’s life, such as applying for a passport or child benefit.
  • You can order certificates when booking your appointment and pay by debit or by credit card.
  • Certificates can also be purchased at the appointment by debit or credit card.

Corrections to birth registrations

The registrar will ask you to check all the information recorded in the register. This is a legal document and therefore it is important that the registration is accurate.

Any correction of errors discovered after the registration has been completed, will incur a charge of £83 to £99 as well as the cost of replacement certificates.


Birth re-registration appointments

Appointments to re-register a birth cannot be made online.

You will need to request a re-registration appointment, if you are:

  • re-registering your child following your marriage or civil partnership.
  • adding father's or second parent's details to an existing registration.

Child Benefit

You can claim as soon as you register your child’s birth. It can be backdated for up to three months.

Information about can be found on GOV.UK including the . For your first child, you need to print the form, fill it in, and post it to the Child Benefit Office. Or contact the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and they will send you a form.

The form also explains the High-Income Child Benefit Charge (HICBC), which applies to a small number of families.

Registering your child with a doctor

New parents can register their child with a doctor's practice without a birth certificate.
